Report: Illinois kids faring better, but problems remain

SPRINGFIELD (AP) - Illinois children better than 20 years now, but are still facing problems and money for education and mental health, a new study comes to the conclusion.

Preschool participation rose to nearly 90000 students in the year 2007, from 10000 to less than 1987, said the “Illinois Kids Count” report released Thursday by Voices for Illinois Children.

Another improvement was an expansion of public health insurance to more than 1.3 million of the state of 3 million children, can be read in the report. He also cited a sharp decrease of children living in care activities, about 17000 in the year 2006 from a peak of 50000 in 1997.

“Twenty years of data show that children growing up today are much better than their colleagues, a generation ago,” Jerry Stermer, President of Voices for Illinois Children, said in a statement.

The report uses data from the population census, the public health of the state and other sources. It also happens that the state legislature, so that the return of two weeks of a legislative pause.

Voices Sean Noble spokesman said he hopes the legislature will have to examine the data once that decisions on the state budget.

Matt Vanover, a spokesman for the Illinois State Board of Education, had not seen, but the report said, over 70 percent of 873 schools are considered to be the highest of the four categories to describe conditions Financial. It fell from 40 per cent compared to 2004.

School districts in the lowest of four levels have dropped by 3 percent this year, from 17 percent in 2004.

“We have seen several stages in the last five years in the financing of training by the state,” said Vanover. “We have seen an increase of $ 5.9 billion within that time frame for our schools in Illinois.”

The report also cites the need for the economic support of the families of several programs, as many low-income families face more unemployment.

“I think this is an area, and in particular the need where we no longer have to be done to help families to be able to keep food on the table for their children, clothes on their backs and a roof over of the head, “said Noble.
